artist's Statement  field sketch

There are many connotations of the word FIELD , generally used to describe a mass of land or a general category with sub-categories or components. A FIELD is many architectural spaces that become a city block, conglomerations in modern society or an undulating territory. This installation is about space, materiality and the process that brings them together to form a grassy FIELD.

The installation space, entirely white, is configured with banks of windows on two adjoining walls, anchoring the space in its urban context. Walls are of masonry and field stone, the floor of concrete. A large masonry pier grows vertically from the center of the space supporting an array of timber beams radiating outward, and forming a tree-like skeleton.

Translucent paper is the material used for its ideal qualities for developing and sorting ideas, and its ability to overlay existing ones. Repetitive, obsessive hand processes, including, rolling, folding and cutting shape the grassy texture that carpets the space.
