LINEN consists of 36 translucent panels of cheesecloth saturated in white paint and egg yolk. The milky forms hang at regular intervals from 12 steel cables spanning the masonry and fieldstone walls of The Old American Can Factory alleyway. Patches of the loose weave are filled with paint and yolk; the panel edges are uneven and frayed in parts. These irregularities give the delicate forms an organic, individual feel, as well as a kind of anchor and grit. The sloping alleyway allows one to interact with the cloth pieces as both intimate objects faced directly, and as untouchable entities elevated above one's head. Hanging the work in open air, exposed to the elements, the artist offers up her work while asking others in.
Miriam Katz is a Brooklyn-based artist working in a variety of disciplines, including painting, drawing, sculpture and installation. She received her BA in Comparative Literature from Barnard College in 2002, and has since worked as an Editorial Researcher at Artforum Magazine. The presentation of LINEN, her first project to be exhibited, completes her Summer residency at The Old American Can Factory where LINEN was conceived and developed.
